Still Life

I built a still-life setup for a charcoal drawing, treating light and shadow as the true subject. Cast shadows from a clamped light knit the objects together. I chose charcoal for its breathy grays and velvety blacks, and used a kneaded eraser to carve ribbons of light from the dark. The distinct textures of the objects create edges that go lost-and-found, and the negative shapes are weighed as carefully as the forms. Background smudges keep the school studio present.
